If your Mac registers the device as soon as a new cable is attached, then you’ve found the source of the problem, and there’s really only one solution: buy a new cable! If the device in question is an Apple product, then it might also be worth taking your Mac and peripheral to your local Apple Store, to see whether they’re willing to let you quickly use one of their cables.
